The Verlinden Avenue factory was built in 1920 by former General Motors CEO William Durant.
Durant Motors produced cars there until the company folded in 1932.
The plant sat vacant until GM purchased it in 1935 and it became known as Fisher Body.
Over the years, Lansing workers produced hundreds of thousands Oldsmobile bodies at Verlinden,
including the Delta 88, 98, Cutlass, Vista Cruiser, 442, Hurst/Olds, Toronado, and Alero.
After the bodies were completed here, they were trucked over to the final assembly factory on the Grand River
near Logan Street. Fisher Body was renamed Buick Oldsmobile Cadillac
Body Assembly in the 1980's, and
then later renamed again, as Lansing Car Assembly.
The last Oldsmobile ever built, an Alero, rolled off the line in Lansing on April 29th, 2004.
The very last body produced at Verlinden was a Pontiac Grand Am, built on May 5th, 2005.
Sadly, Fisher Body was shuttered forever the next day. Demolition commenced
on the 2,630,000 square foot facility in 2007. There are currently no plans for the site.
