In the early-1970's, Lansing's old single-screen movie houses and drive-ins gradually began
to give way to something new, the multiplex theatre. The Multiplexes offered modern convenience, comfort,
and multiple movies in one theatre. Over the years, Lansing's choices included the Elmwood 8 on the
west side, and the Super Cinemas, the Spartan Twin and the Meridian 1-4 and 5-8 on the east side.
Like the single-screen theatres they replaced, these are all gone now.
The Elmwood 8 opened off Elmwood Drive near the Lansing Mall in 1984, and closed in 2004.
The empty building remains, and is still for sale in late-2007.

The Super Cinemas was opened in the fall of 1992, adjacent to the M-78 Drive-In, in Merdian Township.
It replaced one of the M-78's three screens, reducing it back to a twin. The opening of the
Super Cinemas actually coincided with the closing of the drive-in. It was expected to be reopened in the Spring
of 1993, but it never did. The Super Cinemas carried on by itself, and struggled with running second-run movies until
it's closing in October, 2003. The vacant theater building remains for sale in late-2007, along with the remnants of
the M-78 Drive-In.

The Spartan Twin opened near Frandor in late-1967. It ran the very popular Rocky Horror Picture Show for many
years on Saturday nights. The Spartan was eventually converted to a triple, and closed in February, 1994. The building
was used as a Discovery Zone for a time, and was eventually demolished. There is a Rite-Aid store on the site now.
The Meridian 1-4 (or Meridian West 4) opened with the Meridian Mall in 1969, one of the first four-screen multiplexes
in the country. The Meridian 5-8 opened on the East end of the mall in 1977. The 1-4 closed in October 1993, closing
date on the 5-8 is unknown at this writing.
In 2007, Lansing's remaining Multiplexes include the
Lansing Mall 6 on the west side,
Celebration Cinema 20 on the south side,
NCG Eastwood 18 on the north side, and the
Meridian Outer 6 on the east side.
